Edward Santow

Edward Santow is Australia's Human Rights Commissioner. Ed's current work focuses especially on protecting the basic rights of refugees & asylum seekers; promoting responsible innovation in technology; human rights issues affecting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people; the protection of the basic rights of people who are detained, including through the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture (OPCAT); freedom of religion and human rights issues related to terrorism. Prior to becoming Australia's Human Rights Commissioner, Ed was chief executive of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre, a leading non-profit organisation that promotes human rights through strategic litigation, policy development and education. Ed is a lawyer and former academic. He is a Visiting Professorial Fellow at the University of New South Wales Law School.
