Despite occupying only about 5% of land area, coastal wetlands store approximately 50% of all carbon buried in ocean sediments. Blue carbon ecosystems can store between 10 and 100 times more carbon than forests, while also providing essential support in biodiversity, coastal resilience and livelihoods.
Can blue carbon projects reverse the loss of coastal habitats and provide the impetus to conserve and restore them?
