Professor of the Public Understanding of Philosophy, University of Sheffield

Degree in Classics and PhD in Ancient Philosophy, New Hall (now Murray Edwards College), University of Cambridge. After a Research Fellowship at Christ’s College, Cambridge, moved to the Philosophy Department, University of Warwick; 2012, appointed Professor of the Public Understanding of Philosophy, University of Sheffield. Honorary Patron, Philosophy Foundation; Advisory Board of Plato's Academy Centre; Board member of the Royal Institute of Philosophy; Editorial Board member of the Journal of Philosophy in Schools; Advisory Council of the Speakers' Corner Trust; Chair of the Arts and Ideas Trust 2011-2016 (responsible for the HowTheLightGetsIn Festival at Hay-on-Wye); Executive Committee Member of British Philosophical Association (2013-22); Executive Committee member and Trustee of the Forum for Philosophy (formerly the Forum for European Philosophy) 2015-21. Has published widely in areas of ancient philosophy and literature, and ethics and political theory from the ancient world to the present, including Plato and the Hero and Plato's Republic: a Ladybird Expert Book. Contributes regularly to radio and TV programmes, videos; podcasts, webinars, newspaper and magazine articles. Has spoken at the World Economic Forum at Davos, the Athens Democracy Forum, in the U.K. Houses of Parliament, The Scottish Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the United States Air Force Training Academy and been the guest on both Desert Island Discs and Private Passions. 2018-9 Global Future Council for Values, Ethics and Innovation. Judge for the 2019 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction.
