Focusing on innovation, open science, and intellectual property, Richard is a James McGill Professor at McGill’s Faculty of Law , Faculty of Medicine, and the Bieler School of the Environment. He serves as Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property at McGill and is Strategic Lead, Policy and Training at Conscience (conscience.ca), a non-profit building an open science drug discovery network. He has advised the World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, UNITAID as well as local governments. He is broadly published in law, international relations, management, ethics, science policy and policy journals, is frequently interviewed and is active in translating research into policy. He has participated in patent law cases, on a pro bono basis, in which courts grapple with cutting-edge patent issues.
