Fatou Jeng

Climate Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General

Fatou Jeng is a climate activist/ professional from the Gambia, focused on education, conservation and planting trees. In March 2023, the United Nations' Secretary-General announced Fatou and 6 others as members of his Youth Advisory Group on Climate Change to provide him with practical and outcome-focused advice, diverse youth perspectives and concrete recommendations, with a clear focus on accelerating the implementation of his climate action agenda. Fatou also represents young people at the UN Secretary General’s Early Warning for All Advisory Panel.

She is internationally recognized as an organizer of youth climate action in the country, including hosting the first National Children and Youth Conference on Climate Change. Her organization has planted over 35,000 trees across The Gambia including planting over 14,000 coconut trees across Banjul beach with Future Proof under Banjul City Council to curb rising sea-level in Banjul. She also has served as a moderator, speaker, and resource person for over 30 global and regional climate high-level climate events including the United Nations General Assembly, SDG Summit, the annual Conference of Parties (COPs), Africa Climate Weeks, ECOSOC Forum, High Level Political Forum, World Bank, World Water Week and many more.

Due to her climate leadership, Fatou recently received the YOUNGSTER Award at GREENTECH Award 2024 in Berlin. She was also one of the recipients of the "Award for Women Championing Environmental Rights – 2023 by the Geneva Centre for Human Rights Advancement and Global Dialogue, awarded Top 100 Young African Conservation leaders 2021 by the WWF. She was also recognised as one of the 8 women shaping Africa’s Future by the Global Landscape Forum .

Fatou’s work has been seen on The New York Times, BBC World News and Radio, The Independent, The Guardian, Deutsche Welle (DW), Thomas Reuters, East African Times etc.
