Jonas Brendebach

Research Associate, School of Transnational Governance

Jonas is a research associate at the School of Transnational Governance (STG) of the European University Institute. He works on European security, Europe as laboratory of transnational governance and the European Union’s response to the global COVID-19 crisis. Before joining the STG, he worked as desk officer at the transatlantic division of the German Federal Foreign Office focusing on US domestic politics as well as on US-German bilateral security cooperation.
Jonas holds a PhD in international history from the European University Institute and a BA and MA degree from Humboldt University, Berlin. He was a visiting scholar at Columbia University and Erasmus student at the University of Cambridge. His PhD investigated UNESCO as a hub for transnational policy making in the 1970s drawing on the example of development communication policies discussed at UNESCO at the time. Jonas’ interest in the role of media and the public in the international arena led to the publication of the book "International Organizations and the Media in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" (Routledge 2018).
