Master's degree, Grinnell College; doctorate, Georgetown University. 1971-75, in Africa, translated for Mohammed Ali during Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight fight and joined Zaire River Expedition down Congo River on 100th anniversary of Stanley's exploration; 1977, taught Shakespeare, Georgetown University; Ambassador to UN and Director, US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, during Reagan Administration; 2001-06, Member, Defense Policy Board. Member, Advisory Board, National Counter-Terrorism Center. Executive Director, Arts and Ideas series, Aspen Institute. Author of five books including Co-Author, Shakespeare in Charge, and hundreds of articles.
