Poon King Wang is the Director of the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities (LKYCIC) at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). He is concurrently Senior Director - Strategic Planning at SUTD, and Co-Director of the SUTD-JTC Industrial Infrastructure Innovation Centre. He also leads the efforts of the Smart Cities Lab and the Future Digital Economies and Digital Societies initiative at the LKYCIC/SUTD.
King Wang is on the Board of the UNEP-BCA Centre for Sustainable Buildings Ltd (a collaboration between the United Nations Environment Programme and Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority), Singapore's government-wide Services & Digital Economy Technology Roadmap Workgroup on Future-Ready Technologies, the International Advisory Panel of IoT Asia, and the Board of Live with AI (a France-Singapore think tank on Artificial Intelligence).
He draws extensively on his public and private sector experiences. In the Singapore public sector, he served in the Economic Development Board in industry strategy, restructuring, development and promotion; Ministry of Law in intellectual property policies and knowledge management; Agency for Science, Technology and Research (including its commercialization arm Exploit Technologies) on research strategies, national R&D surveys, technology futures/foresight, research commercialization, organizational excellence, and youth science outreach; and the Competition Commission of Singapore where, as a Director, he led free-trade agreement negotiations for the European Union-Singapore FTA and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, public communications, and organizational development, and chaired two Southeast Asia/ASEAN-wide workgroups on competition policies.
In the private sector, he was head of business analytics at UOB (one of Singapore's largest banks), where he built the team, capabilities and infrastructure in data-mining, business intelligence, campaign management, and web analytics. He was also a strategy advisor to a mobile local search startup.
King Wang holds a MSc (Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management) from Stanford University, a BSc (Electrical Engineering) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Rocket Engineering Certificate from Moscow State Technical University.
