Conductor and composer. Began violin lessons at the age of 5, conducting lessons at 7. Studied with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff and appeared publicly for the first time at age 8. Between the ages of 9 and 15, conducted most major American orchestras. Former: Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Deutsche Oper Berlin; Music Director, Cleveland Orchestra; GM, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Vienna State Opera; Music Director, Pittsburgh Symphony. 1993-2002, Music Director, Symphony Orchestra, Bavarian Radio. 2002-09, Music Director, New York Philharmonic. Spring 2011, completed 5th and final season as inaugural Music Director, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia. Since 2012/13 season, Music Director, Munich Philharmonic. Founder, Exec. & Artistic Director, Castleton Festival. Has conducted nearly 200 orchestras in 7,000 opera and concert performances. Has made over 300 recordings. Recipient, ten Grands Prix du Disque.
