Extensive regional and international experience. Held senior diplomatic posts in the Foreign Ministry and in the Embassies of Uruguay in Germany and Iran. Five years as Ambassador to China. 2010-15, Foreign Minister of Uruguay. Was an active participant in the consolidation of UNASUR and CELAC. As Member, special UNASUR delegation to Venezuela in 2014, recognized as an advocate of dialogue between the government and the opposition to stop the violence at that moment. 2014, elected Senator in the national elections in Uruguay. 2015, elected Secretary-General of the Organization of American States; announced that one of the central themes of mandate will be “more rights for more people”, working to bring the organization closer to the new realities in the hemisphere and contribute to ensuring more democracy, security and prosperity for all. Has continued to advocate decisively for the reconstruction of the country’s democracy and the protection of human rights and political liberties. Named a “Leading Global Thinker”, Foreign Policy magazine (2014).
