Michael Calvey

Chairman of Baring Ventures, Baring Vostok Capital Partners

Michael Calvey is Chairman of Baring Ventures, which advises private equity funds with assets of approximately $5 billion and holds stakes in trailblazing tech companies such as Kaspi, Revolut and Plata.

Calvey, a US citizen, was born in Wisconsin and grew up in Oklahoma, where he studied business and computer science at the University of Oklahoma, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in 1989. He also holds a Master’s degree in finance from the London School of Economics (LSE).

Being at the forefront of growth markets defines Calvey’s decades-long career, which took him to Salmon Brothers NY (1989) and then the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in the early 90s.

After leaving EBRD, Calvey in 1994 co-founded Baring Vostok, a private equity firm best known for discovering tech champions like Yandex and Tinkoff at the early stages of their development. In 2022 the Baring funds decided to fully exit their Russian portfolio while continuing to develop their global assets.

The international firm, Baring Ventures, is now an independent entity led by Calvey, and it continues to advise and invest in forward-thinking companies across the world.
