What if India could lead?
Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive Officer of Alcatel-Lucent and a member of the World Economic Forum’s Foundation Board, is blogging from the India Economic Summit, held in New Delhi 14-16 November 2010. He will be speaking at the India Economic Summit’s Plenary Session on Monday 15 November on the topic “Innovating Rural Entrepreneurship towards Employment”.
We all heard about how difficult the last G20 meeting was.
No wonder, because the world is dealing with a multiple set of issues at the same time.
It is very significant that we have the G20. A better platform than we have ever seen before, simply because more of the developing nations are represented. It is a more inclusive setting.
But noblesse obliges. Just being there is not enough. If you claim a seat you have the obligation to drive solutions. Just being there to stay on the course of the past isn't good enough. It is all about the power to jump over one's own shadow to create leadership that produces results.
The Seoul meeting did produce at least one massive opportunity.
It carefully worded some hope that the Doha rounds would get a chance again to get world trade going.
India here has a vital role to play.
The world has changed and is looking for creativity and commitment to stop the threat of protectionism by embracing a new vitality in global trade.
India can show the world its new level of confidence and leadership by getting Doha to succesfully conclude.
It would be a surprise, I agree,
But surprises like these are what the world needs and India can provide.
