Ban Ki-moon: The people who inspire me

Ban Ki-moon

After accepting her Nobel Prize, Malala Yousafzai shared a special message and video on the Malala Fund page calling on three inspiring people, including me, who will work with her in 2015 to see #TheLast child deprived of education.

I am honoured to be mentioned by Malala – someone who continues to inspire me – on this important day.

My work as Secretary-General is only possible thanks to countless nameless people who share the values of the United Nations and courageously advance our causes in some of the toughest environments on earth.

I nominate two groups and one individual:

  • Our brave peacekeepers who travel far from their home countries to dangerous areas to bring greater stability
  • The many fearless responders to the Ebola outbreak who prove the power of human solidarity
  • Fahma Mohamed, the young activist who stood up against female genital mutilation, gaining government support in the United Kingdom and proving that a single individual can impact the fight for human rights around the world.
