The UK has been ranked as best in the world for the provision of end-of-life care by an Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) report.

The report assessed 80 nations based on the quality of hospital and hospice environments, staffing numbers and skills, affordability of care and quality of care, to create a score out of 100.

The United Kingdom received full marks for affordability given that its National Health Service provides free care at the point of need, but also for the quality of care.

Following the UK, in second place, is Australia with a score of 91.6. The top three is completed by its neighbour, New Zealand.

While the top 10 is dominated by some of the world’s richest nations, the report emphasized the progress made in some of the world’s poorer nations. For example, Mongolia (at number 28) has been able to invest in hospices, and Uganda (35th) has used a public-private partnership model.
