What is the cheapest city for students?
Berlin has been named the cheapest city for students by World Student Housing 2015. A total of 22 global universities were part of the report, which compared cost of living, accommodation and tuition. The sample student for the study was an “International student on a non-specialist undergraduate science degree, staying in purpose-built student accommodation.” Under those criteria, a student in Berlin can expect expenses of about $1000 per month, a far cry from the most expensive city, Boston, where expenses are estimated at $5,446 per month.
Germany has seen a surge in university enrolment, in part due to lower costs of living combined with its recent decision to abolish tuition fees. German universities also offer a vast array of undergraduate English language courses, leading to an influx of English speaking students, artists and other creative types. In a study conducted by TopUniversities.com between 2012 and 2013, Germany was found to be the fourth most popular choice for international grad students, after the US, UK and Canada.
