Artificial intelligence (AI) has already become an integral part of our daily lives, influencing everything from the way we shop to how we communicate.

Among the most transformative developments in this field are AI agents – autonomous systems capable of sensing, learning and acting upon their environments. They are on course to transform industries, enhance efficiencies and tackle complex societal challenges such as healthcare and education.

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent can be thought of as an autonomous system that senses its environment through sensors, processes inputs to make decisions, and acts upon its surroundings using effectors to achieve specific goals.

Key components of an AI agent include user inputs (e.g., commands or data), sensors (e.g., cameras or databases), a control centre for decision-making, and effectors to execute actions, whether in physical or digital environments.

The concept of AI agents has evolved over the years, transitioning from early rule-based programmes of the 1950s to sophisticated autonomous systems that are developed and released today.

Breakthroughs in machine learning and neural networks, have since the 1990s, allowed AI to process larger datasets and manage greater uncertainty.

This evolution has been accelerated by recent advances in large language models (LLMs) and multimodal models (LMMs), which have transformed the ability of AI systems to understand and generate natural language, paving the way for more capable AI agents to emerge.

Advanced AI agents

Current advancements in AI agents are often linked to LLMs or LMMs, which are used to tackle complex tasks that require greater autonomy and adaptability.

The architecture of AI agents tends to consist of a control centre that orchestrates user inputs, decision-making, memory management, and interaction with external tools. Features such as chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning enable transparent, step-by-step problem-solving, while memory components ensure continuity and context in operations like conversational AI.

Recent advancements are linked to the concept of multi-agent systems (MAS), where independent AI agents collaborate, compete or negotiate to achieve shared goals.

A multi-agent system – as the name indicates – consists of multiple specialized agents, which hold capacity to operate in parallel, communicate and adapt to dynamic environments, which makes these systems effective in tackling complex tasks. The ability for these systems to converse in natural language enhances the transparency of interactions between them.

Advanced AI agents and multi-agent systems, hold the capacity to integrate diverse tools, from real-time data retrieval to project management software. With capabilities to learn, plan and act autonomously, advanced AI agents are likely to transform a range of sectors in the years to come.

AI agents in action

AI agents are still a nascent phenomenon, while rapid development and experimentation has started to see agents move from research into actual production and utilization. Many of the underlying economic drivers are linked to automating tasks, enhancing productivity and filling skill gaps in areas of high demand.

In software development, AI agents already assist in generating, testing and debugging code – freeing developers for higher-value tasks, while in healthcare, AI agents can help enhance diagnostics, optimize treatment plans and alleviate workloads in under-resourced areas. AI-powered chatbots also improve customer service by providing round-the-clock support.

Meanwhile in education, agents can help personalize learning experiences, offering tailored content and supporting teachers with administrative tasks, and in finance, agents can help boost fraud detection, optimize trading strategies and deliver personalized investment advice, demonstrating capacity to analyse large datasets and provide actionable insights.

The autonomy of AI agents also enables them to address open-ended challenges, from contributing to advance scientific discovery to managing rare scenarios unsuited to traditional automation. This adaptability extends to physical environments as well, where AI agents can navigate and manipulate objects, offering innovative solutions in areas such as logistics and robotics.

Risks and benefits of AI agents

Despite their transformative potential, AI agents come with significant challenges that span technical, socioeconomic, and ethical dimensions.

A major concern is that increasing autonomy could lead to misaligned objectives or unintended behaviours. AI agents might exploit programming loopholes (specification gaming), misapply learned goals in novel scenarios (goal misgeneralization), or appear aligned during testing while harbouring different internal objectives (deceptive alignment).

These and other risks are compounded in multi-agent systems, where effective communication and coordination are crucial yet difficult to achieve, especially in dynamic or safety-critical environments. Furthermore, malicious use – such as AI-driven scams or automated cyberattacks – highlights the need for robust security measures and fail-safes to mitigate these risks.

Addressing novel challenges of AI agents requires a comprehensive and context-sensitive approach. To ensure safety and security, AI systems need to incorporate rigorous testing, transparency measures and continuous behavioural monitoring. Techniques like establishing thresholds, triggers and alerts can help detect and mitigate failures in real time.

Clear protocols for interoperability between multi-agent systems are also essential to prevent miscommunication and ensure reliable operation. These measures should be complemented by robust data governance frameworks that prioritize equity, privacy and accountability.

By tailoring risk analysis to the specific application and environment – whether in high-stakes areas like healthcare or lower-risk contexts such as customer service – stakeholders can implement effective mitigation strategies that align with the intended purpose of the AI agent.

New uses for AI agents in digital and physical environments

The integration of AI agents into various aspects of life is intrinsically linked to new forms of human-computer interaction, which are likely to unfold as adoption increases.

New practices are expected to lead to more personalized, dynamic and interactive exchanges with AI agents across digital as well as physical environments, with use-cases spanning from digital assistants to physical robots.

In many ways, AI agents are expected to empower human potential by enabling greater assistance in routine tasks, freeing individuals to focus on creativity or higher value-added jobs, along with interpersonal interaction and communication.

To realize the potential of AI agents while mitigating risks, governments, industry leaders and international organizations need to work together to create and enforce best practices that guide the ethical development and deployment of AI agents. This includes setting new standards for transparency and accountability among others.
