As an Indian Foreign Service officer, served abroad at the Indian Missions in Tehran, Colombo and Geneva, and at headquarters covering bilateral and multilateral issues related to political affairs, security, non-proliferation, technology, development and human rights; Head of the Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division, Ministry of External Affairs 2013-2016; India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva from 2017-2018. In 2017, helped set up the National Task Force on Artificial Intelligence for India’s Economic Transformation and chaired the Group of Governmental Experts of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) on emerging technologies in the area of lethal autonomous weapon systems, which agreed on a set of Guiding Principles for these technologies in August 2018. As Executive Director of the Secretariat of the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation, helped the Chairs,Melinda Gates and Jack Ma, deliver a path-breaking report in June 2019. Currently, heading a new multistakeholder initiative on international digital health and AI research collaboration. Professional interests focus on digital public goods, science, security and international policy learning. Personal interests include creative writing, education, Yoga and sustainable agriculture.
