Gülnur Aybet is Senior Adviser to the President of Turkey, member of Presidential Security and Foreign Policy Council, and professor of international relations at Yildiz Technical University, Istanbul. She was former Head of Department of Political Science and International Relations and founding Director of BAUCESS, Centre for Security Studies at Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul. In 2013 she founded the International Relations Department at Ozyegin University, Istanbul. She held academic posts at the University of Kent, England between 2001-2013 where she created and directed the first MA programme in International Security. She also taught at the University of Nottingham, England and Bilkent University Ankara. She holds a BA Hons degree in Economics and Public Administration from Royal Holloway, University of London, an MSc in International Relations from the University of Southampton, an M. Phil in War Studies from King’s College, University of London and she completed her PhD in International Relations from the University of Nottingham. Professor Aybet has been a Principal Investigator to many research projects funded by the British Academy, NATO and TUBITAK. She has held visiting scholar posts at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Johns Hopkins University the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars in Washington D.C. and at St Antony’s College, Oxford University, where she was also a Senior Associate Member of the College. She is a well-known commentator on current affairs in the international media. In 2009, The Times nominated her as one of the top 20 most powerful Muslim women in the United Kingdom.
