Dr Diva Amon is a Caribbean marine biologist at the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a WEF Friend of Ocean Action, and a 2020 National Geographic Emerging Explorer. Diva studies the weird and wonderful animals in parts of the deep ocean, from Antarctica to the Mariana Trench, that few, if any, have visited before. She also researches the ever-increasing impacts that humans are having on the deep ocean, including from deep-sea mining, pollution and climate change. This has resulted in over 75 peer-reviewed papers and numerous presentations to decision-makers, including at the United Nations, International Seabed Authority, Convention on Biological Diversity and the Nobel Dialogue. She has also starred as an expert contributor in numerous television programs including the National Geographic and Disney+ series, Welcome to Earth, accompanying Hollywood star Will Smith down into the deepest oceans. Diva is also the co-Founder of the non-profit NGO, SpeSeas, dedicated to increasing marine science, education, and advocacy in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.
