Hilary Mathews is the Senior Director for Gender Justice at CARE USA, where she has worked since 2016. She is the senior-most adviser on gender equality for CARE USA and co-leads the CARE confederation’s gender equality strategy.
A feminist international development professional, Hilary has more than 20 years of experience in policy and programme implementation to accelerate impact on gender equality and health.
Between 2013 and 2016, Hilary provided policy advice and technical assistance as a consultant to UN and non-governmental agencies on gender integration, prevention of violence against women, HIV prevention, and resource mobilization. Prior to that, Hilary worked for the US Government’s global HIV programme (PEPFAR) for eight years in several leadership capacities in Washington DC and Tanzania. She has also worked for the Council on Foreign Relations, UC Berkeley, and the World Health Organization. Hilary began her career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Burkina Faso and has a BA from Columbia University and MPA from Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs.
