BA in Biology, Colorado College; MSc in Zoology, University of Washington; PhD in Ecology, Harvard University. Marine Ecologist and Environmental Scientist. Formerly: taught at 1975-77, Harvard; 1977-2009, Oregon State University; 1999-2009, led PISCO, a four university, interdisciplinary team of scientists investigating large marine ecosystem along coasts of Washington, Oregon and California. Former President: American Association for the Advancement of Science; International Council for Science; Ecological Society of America, Since 2009, current position. Twelve honorary degrees. Recipient of numerous awards including: MacArthur Fellowship; Heinz Award in the Environment (2002); AAAS Award for Public Understanding of Science and Technology (2005); Zayed International Prize for the Environment (2008). Scientific expertise includes oceans, climate change, interactions between environment and human well-being.
