I have a PhD in Physiology and I have extensive experience in the research field of respiratory physiology, particularly lung development with special reference to factors that adversely affect and/ or protect normal growth and development of neonatal lungs. I also held a post-doctoral position at the Medical Research Council, Programme on Mycotoxins and Environmental Carcinogens. My current research project focuses on identifying prognostic markers to predict inhalation injury in burns patients with (a collaboration with the Burns Unit, Tygerberg Hospital, Stellenbosch University and the South African National Bioinformatics Institute (SANBI), University of the Western Cape.
