Kate Patterson

Senior Research Officer: Biomedical Animator and Visual Science Communicator, Garvan Institute

Kate’s work primarily focuses on using visual language to translate complex scientific discoveries for varied audiences. She is a registered biomedical illustrator with the Australian Institute of Medical and Biomedical Illustrators and an active member of the Australian Science Communicators network.

Kate graduated from the University of Sydney faculty of Veterinary Science in 2003. She worked full time as a small animal veterinarian until 2005 and then continued to work part time in clinical practice while completing her PhD in cancer biology, signal transduction at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

Her PhD was awarded in 2009 and following this, Kate worked with Professor Susan Clark in the Epigenetics Research Group at the Garvan Institute as a science writer and visual science communicator. She also worked part time as a freelance medical and scientific illustrator trading as MediPics and Prose, and as a science writer for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

From 2012-2015 Kate worked as a biomedical animator as part of the VIZBIplus team and the Inspiring Australia Unlocking Australia's potential initiative. She now works with Professor Susan Clark, head of the Genomics and Epigenetics division at the Garvan Institute, is a Fellow of the 3D Aesthetics and Viualisation laboratory and lecturer at UNSW Art and Design.
