Nonhlanhla Nxumalo is Deputy Director and Researcher at the Centre for Health Policy, School of Public Health at University of the Witwatersrand. Focussing on health policy and systems research, her interest are in access to care, the social determinants of health and human resources for health. Her doctoral research examined the extent to which community health workers support the implementation of primary health care and enable marginalised communities to access the formal health system including other sectors that are associated with the social determinants of health. She is involved in a project called the Consortium for Health Policy and Analysis in Africa (CHEPSAA) and is the co-ordinator of the consortium's capacity development component - the Emerging Leaders Programme. She is part of the Resilient and Responsive Health Systems (RESYST) consortium where she is conducting research that seeks to strengthen the district health system in South Africa, focussing on governance and accountability. Nonhlanhla is involved in teaching in the School's MPH programme. This includes her role in two of the programme's modules - as a co-facilitator of the Health Policy Analysis and a coordinator and facilitator of the Introduction to Health and Health Systems. Nonhlanhla supervises Masters and PhD students.
