Scientists Have Found a Hidden Source of Water on Moon
The water is trapped inside ‘glass beads’ on the Moon’s surface. Scientists think the water molecules come from the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun. Solar hydrogen reacts with oxygen on the surface of the glass beads, which behave like a sponge, absorbing the water molecules. The glass beads themselves are created after rocks smash into the Moon at high speeds, then melt and cool. This water on Moon accumulates quickly over only a few years and is relatively easy to extract by heating the glass beads. Once, the Moon’s surface was thought to be dry. The presence of an active water cycle is good news for Moon exploration. This new source of water on Moon would be essential for long-term bases staffed by astronauts, both for drinking supply and as a fuel ingredient. Watch to learn more.
