The Future of Advanced Technology: Shaping AI Governance

This video is part of: Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

As the global landscape of artificial intelligence evolves, the need for effective AI governance and regulations becomes increasingly important. Rwanda is at the forefront of this transformation, implementing strategic policies to harness AI's potential while addressing associated risks.

Rwanda's approach to AI governance

The disparity in access to AI resources between high-income and low- to middle-income countries is significant. High-income countries have better computing capacity and data sets, while lower-income countries face challenges.

However, democratizing access to computing infrastructure could help bridge this gap. As AI governance becomes more prominent, industry-specific regulations are necessary to manage risks like bias in data, privacy issues, and cybersecurity threats.

Job disruption and wage depression from generative AI also pose challenges. Rwanda is proactively addressing these issues with national AI policies and developing a skilled workforce.

Harmonizing policy across Africa is crucial for scalable AI solutions, which will support growth for startups and MSMEs. This unified approach can harness AI's potential to address infrastructure gaps and drive economic development.
