The Cities in Motion Index, created by Spain's IESE Business School, ranks 183 cities across 9 dimensions to identify the most "smart and sustainable" cities. These dimensions include green policies, social cohesion, mobility, and the economy.
New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin were ranked among the top 5, with London taking the lead for the sixth consecutive year. Among other reasons, it was lauded for its green infrastructure and advanced tech systems.
Likewise, New York received recognition for its excellence in the 'economy' dimension. Tokyo's technological advancement and Berlin's fair governance also received special mention, while the eco-friendly urban planning of Paris was also acknowledged.
The IESE report acknowledges that various approaches can lead to success in becoming a smart and sustainable city. Examples include Cape Town offering free Wi-Fi on buses and Santiago electrifying 30% of its bus fleet.
With the global urban population projected to double by 2050, the need for smart and sustainable cities becomes increasingly crucial. These rankings offer valuable insights into the diverse approaches cities are taking to address this challenge.
