This is the first 100% sustainably powered long-haul flight
A Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787 flew from London to New York on 28 November using only sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The fuel was derived from food waste such as cooking oil and animal fats. It can be used as a direct replacement for fossil fuel-derived jet fuel. The aviation industry has pledged to reach net zero by 2050. SAF is expected to generate two-thirds of the emission cuts required.
