The US Is Funding a Massive $300 Million Alzheimer’s Research Database
The 6-year project will begin in 2024 with the goal of creating an Alzheimer’s registry within 21 months. It will draw on medical records, insurance claims, and pharmacy and device data. In time, it could house the health data of 70-90% of Americans. For confidentiality, the system will be built in a secure computing environment equipped with restrictions to ensure the privacy of people's data, say the project leaders. Long-term data is crucial to learning about Alzheimer’s which can start to develop 20 years before symptoms appear. The database could identify people at risk of the condition and chart the impact of new drugs such as Lecanemab which was recently found to reduce cognitive decline by 27% in early-stage patients.
